The Very Best of South America

Following breakfast, we meet with our fellow travelling companions to learn more of the adventures that lay ahead. Our tour begins in the historic heart of Lima, taking in the elegant colonial architecture of Plaza San Martín and Plaza de Armas. We walk to the San Francisco Monastery, with its vast collection of antique texts and atmospheric catacombs. Later, we explore the contemporary districts of Miraflores and San Isidro, followed by a visit to the Larco Museum, home to over 45,000 pre-Columbian artefacts. Here we have our first introduction to South American cuisine with a delicious lunch in the museum’s enchanting restaurant. Later, we return to the hotel for a leisurely afternoon.

This morning, we transfer to Lima Airport for our flight to Cusco. On arrival, we continue by road to the Sacred Valley. Set at 2,800 metres above sea level, the Sacred Valley was once the agricultural heartland of the Inca Empire. As we drive through this scenic valley, we pass by terraced hillsides, ancient ruins and traditional villages. We arrive at our hotel for the next two nights, Casa Andina Premium Valle Sagrado Hotel & Villas or Sonesta Posadas del Inca Yucay, where we can relax and enjoy the picturesque surroundings.

Today, we explore the heart of the Sacred Valley, where the legacy of the Inca Empire is brought vividly to life through its remarkably preserved ruins and ancient stonework. Our day begins in Chinchero, a charming highland town filled with stories, traditions, and traces of Inca architecture. We explore its ancient ruins before continuing to Moray – a fascinating example of Incan agricultural ingenuity. Here, we walk among vast circular terraces that once served as a plant nursery and climate-testing ground. Standing 30 metres deep, the stone-terraced structure reveals the Incas’ deep understanding of environmental conditions and crop cultivation. Later, we visit Ollantaytambo, one of the best-preserved Inca towns and still home to families living as their ancestors did. The town itself is a living museum of Inca engineering with precision stonework, flowing water channels, and terraced slopes built with astonishing accuracy using simple tools. We explore the village’s narrow cobbled streets and stop at the base of its impressive archaeological site, once a military, religious, and agricultural centre. Nearby, we are welcomed into a typical home to learn more about daily life in the Sacred Valley, where centuries-old traditions still live on. After a fulfilling day of exploring, we return to our hotel.

Following breakfast, we visit a local weaving community tucked away in the Sacred Valley. Warmly welcomed with traditional music and dance by the locals, we spend time learning about the ancient art of Andean weaving. This is a special opportunity to connect with the region’s living heritage, where tradition is proudly preserved in both craft and daily life. Later, we transfer to Ollantaytambo and board the Vistadome Observatory train for our scenic journey to Aguas Calientes, the village at the foot of the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu. With panoramic windows and an open-air balcony, the journey offers spectacular views of the valley as we wind through riverside tracks towards the village. The Bar Car provides a relaxed, social setting to take it all in. On arrival in Aguas Calientes, we walk the short distance to our hotel, El Mapi by Inkaterra, and enjoy dinner together.

We begin the day exploring Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. Our tour starts at the Plaza de Armas, or main square, where we visit the renaissance-styled cathedral, a striking mix of colonial architecture built atop original Inca walls. We walk to Qorikancha, the sacred Inca Temple of the Sun, now the foundation of the colonial Church of Santo Domingo – a symbol of Cusco’s layered history. Next, we visit San Blas, the city’s bohemian quarter. With its whitewashed houses, flower-filled balconies, and cobbled streets, especially postcard-perfect Siete Borreguitos, this artistic neighbourhood is full of studios, galleries, and craft shops. After soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying panoramic city views, we take a break for independent exploration. In the afternoon, we head to Sacsayhuamán, an impressive Inca military fortress known for its massive, precisely cut stone blocks. We continue to Manos de la Comunidad, a community project supporting and preserving local artisans. Here, we meet native Andean camelids – llamas, alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos – and learn about their role in Peruvian culture. Following our day of exploration, we return to our hotel.

Our first Freedom Day in Peru allows us to spend the day as we please. Choose to relax and unwind or venture out to discover this vibrant city at our own pace. Soak in the atmosphere by day or experience the city like never before with an optional ‘Cusco After Dark’ walking tour to discover the secrets of this ancient city. Other options include a Peruvian cooking class with fresh coastal fish, or visit Tipon, Pikillacta, and Andahuaylillas Church to explore pre-Colombian and colonial history.

Today, we leave Peru behind as we head to the airport for our flight to Santiago, Chile’s dynamic and cosmopolitan capital. Upon arrival, we transfer to the Best Western Premier Marina Las Condes, our accommodation for the next three nights. Following check-in, the evening is ours to relax at the hotel or venture out to explore the city’s great selection of restaurants, bars and cafés.

This morning, we drive west to Valparaíso, a colourful port city and UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its bohemian charm, steep hills, funiculars, and vibrant street art. We enjoy panoramic views of the bay and explore the lively port district before lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we return to Santiago for a walking tour of its historic landmarks, including Plaza de Armas, La Moneda Palace, and San Francisco Church. We end the day at San Cristóbal Hill, riding a funicular to the summit for sweeping views of the city and the snow-capped Andes.

Today, we venture into the lush Maipo Valley, Chile’s premier wine region and home to its finest Cabernet Sauvignon. Just 25 miles from Santiago, the valley sits at the Andes’ edge and hosts some of the country’s top vineyards. Our day is spent at Viña Santa Rita, an historic estate founded in 1880. We begin with a guided tour of the estate’s Centennial Park and its renaissance-styled gardens, Roman baths, and neo-Gothic chapel, and visit the legendary ‘Cellar of the 120 Patriots' to hear the story of the Chilean soldiers, who once sheltered here during the struggle for independence. Next, we sample a selection of wines, paired with cheeses, crackers, and nuts, all with stunning vineyard views. The visit ends with a relaxed picnic – perfect for soaking up the Maipo Valley’s peaceful charm.

After breakfast, we say farewell to Santiago and fly south to Puerto Montt, the coastal capital of Chile’s Lake District. Our hotel is located a short distance in nearby Puerto Varas, a picturesque town situated on the shores of Lake Llanquihué. This fan-shaped lake is Chile’s second largest and is framed by the towering, snow-dusted volcanoes Osorno and Calbuco, on its horizon. Home for the next two nights is the Wyndham Puerto Varas Pettra. Sitting on a scenic cliff, the hotel is just a short walk from the town centre, where cosy cafés and restaurants await.

Today, we explore the stunning landscapes surrounding Lake Llanquihué, dominated by the iconic Osorno Volcano. Our journey begins along the lakeshore, passing through the charming towns of Puerto Varas and Puerto Octay, which have been shaped by 19th-century German settlers. In Frutillar, the Bavarian influence is felt everywhere – from the timber-framed houses and ornate churches to the cafés serving up German spiced cakes like kuchen and apfelstrudel, all with sweeping views of the water. We visit the village of Cascada, known for its black sand beaches and its 50-metre waterfall set in lush forest. From here, the road climbs toward Osorno Volcano, offering increasingly dramatic views. At the summit area, weather permitting, we see ancient glaciers clinging to the volcano’s perfect cone, with a breathtaking panorama of rivers, lakes, and peaks below. We pause to take in the scenery before descending to Ensenada, a quiet village nestled beneath the volcano. We then return to Puerto Varas for the evening.

This morning, we depart the lakes and forests of Bariloche and fly south, via Buenos Aires, to El Calafate, a charming town on the southern shore of Lake Argentino and the gateway to Patagonia’s vast ice fields. Upon arrival, we transfer to Hotel Kosten Aike or Hotel Sierra Nevada for a two-night stay. El Calafate’s relaxed atmosphere and quaint streets, lined with cafés, restaurants, and local shops, make it perfect for a leisurely stroll. The rest of the evening is ours to unwind or explore more of El Calafate.

This morning, we say farewell to Patagonia and fly north to Buenos Aires, Argentina’s vibrant capital. Upon arrival, we head into the historic San Telmo district, known for its cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and bohemian energy. With its blend of old-world charm and creative spirit, San Telmo offers a true taste of the city’s soul. We head to the lively San Telmo Antique Fair, held every Sunday in Plaza Dorrego. With over 270 stalls, it’s a haven of vintage finds – from tango records to antique jewellery. The streets come alive with live music and spontaneous tango performances, while local cafés invite you to relax with a coffee or glass of Malbec. Following our visit, we transfer to our hotel, Hotel Grand Brizo Buenos Aires, where we stay for the next three nights. The remainder of our day is at leisure to relax.

Today, we explore the vibrant contrasts of Buenos Aires, where European elegance meets Latin flair. We begin along Avenida 9 de Julio, purportedly the world’s widest avenue, passing the iconic Colón Theatre. Along Avenida de Mayo, we arrive at Plaza de Mayo to visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, once home to the late Pope Francis and the resting place of General San Martín. In colourful La Boca, we stroll ‘Caminito’, a street alive with tango dancers, street art, and immigrant heritage. We continue to Palermo, Buenos Aires’ greenest district, with parks, lakes, and botanical gardens. Our tour ends in elegant Recoleta, known for its grand architecture and the hauntingly beautiful Recoleta Cemetery, where Eva Perón rests. After a leisurely afternoon, we gather for an unforgettable evening at Aljibe Tango. Over a three-course dinner, we enjoy live tango, music, and a gaucho 'boleadora' show – a passionate celebration of Argentine culture.

Today’s Freedom Day is a chance to explore the city at your own pace, revisit neighbourhoods, or relax at a local café and take in the unique atmosphere of Argentina’s charismatic capital. Optional excursions include a scenic boat ride through the lush Tigre Delta, a step back in time exploring the mysterious underground tunnels of Zanjón de Granados, a ferry trip to Uruguay’s charming Colonia del Sacramento with its UNESCO-listed historic centre, or a leisurely stroll through the cobbled streets of San Antonio de Areco, a picturesque gaucho town rich in rural heritage and culture.

We leave the buzz of Buenos Aires and fly north to Puerto Iguazú, a relaxed town where the Iguazú and Paraná Rivers converge. Known as the gateway to the mighty Iguazú Falls, this small, charming community is surrounded by lush subtropical forest. On arrival, we transfer to Loi Suites Iguazú on the Argentinean side of the falls, where we will stay for the next two nights. The afternoon is free to unwind – swim in the hotel’s pool or soak up the town’s relaxed pace. This evening, an optional experience offers a fun introduction to local culture. Try empanada-making, and sample classic dishes such as mate, alfajores, and unlimited Argentinean wine.

Before leaving the rainforest, we cross into Brazil for a new perspective on Iguazú Falls. The Brazilian side offers sweeping views from its easy mile long walkway through lush vegetation, leading to stunning vistas – especially the dramatic Devil’s Throat, now seen in panoramic view. From here, we take in the full spectacle, including Argentinean side landmarks like San Martín Island and the Two Sisters Falls. It’s the perfect vantage point to grasp the scale of over 275 cascades thundering into the gorge below. After lunch overlooking the river, we transfer to Foz do Iguaçu Airport for our flight to Rio de Janeiro, the legendary ‘Marvellous City.’ On arrival, we head to our hotel, Windsor Excelsior Copacabana, in the city’s vibrant south zone for our final three nights in South America.

Our final Freedom Day in South America. Relax on the famed Copacabana or Ipanema Beach, soak up Rio’s vibrant atmosphere, or join one of our optional excursions – perhaps a coastal catamaran cruise, a Rio historical tour with samba experience, or a Rio colonial walking tour through the city’s cultural heart. In the evening, we reunite with our travelling companions and head to one of Copacabana’s classic barbecue restaurants for a final dinner together – an authentic carioca experience and a fitting end to our South American journey.

A morning at leisure to enjoy our remaining time in this beach-loving city. Stroll the 'Portuguese Pavement', Rio’s wavy mosaic Copacabana Beach promenade, enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the many seafront cafés, or perhaps visit the renowned Confeitaria Colombo. In the afternoon we make our way to the airport in time for our Air France / KLM flight, via Paris or Amsterdam to the UK. Alternatively, if choosing British Airways, you will fly direct to London Heathrow.

Our flights arrive at our chosen UK airport of London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, or Aberdeen, this morning and bring an end to our incredible journey through South America.
