Overview
Highlights:
- Cruise Otago Harbour to Taiaroa Head and look for albatross and marine wildlife
- Explore the yellow-eyed penguin reserve at Penguin Place
- Discover the Otago Peninsula’s coastal landscapes, geology and history
Travel from Dunedin to the Otago Peninsula for a combination of coastal scenery, wildlife and conservation. Cruise Otago Harbour aboard the MV Monarch, passing historic Careys Bay, the wharves of Port Chalmers and the harbour’s bays, hills, farmland and forest. Learn about the area’s volcanic geology and Māori and European history along the way.
Continue towards Taiaroa Head, home to the world’s only mainland nesting site of royal albatross. Watch for these large seabirds soaring above the cliffs, as well as New Zealand fur seals, sea lions, penguins, dolphins and other marine life. You may also spot less commonly seen ocean birds, including petrels and other albatross species.
Visit Penguin Place, a private conservation reserve for the endangered yellow-eyed penguin. Travel by small bus to the reserve before walking through covered trenches to viewing hides, where you can observe these shy penguins in their natural habitat.
