Overview
Highlights:
- Explore the Otago Peninsula’s wetlands, coastline and remote beaches
- Watch royal albatross at their Taiaroa Head breeding colony
- Look for yellow-eyed penguins at a dedicated conservation reserve
Travel across the Otago Peninsula along the high road, with views over the harbour, coastline, rural farms and small coastal communities. Explore the wetlands and inlets by minibus, looking for wading birds before continuing to a remote beach. A short walk leads to views of rugged cliffs, offshore islands and, with luck, New Zealand sea lions.
Continue to Taiaroa Head and the Royal Albatross Centre, where a walk up to a private viewing area provides views of the northern royal albatross breeding colony. Watch these large seabirds as they glide overhead or return to their nests.
Visit a yellow-eyed penguin conservation reserve, beginning at the rehabilitation centre before following trails through native bushland to viewing hides. Learn about conservation efforts to protect one of New Zealand’s rarest penguins, with wildlife sightings dependent on natural conditions.
