Kaikoura

Overview

Pre-booking required

Highlights:

  • Search for giant sperm whales in the deep waters of Kaikōura
  • Look for dolphins, seals, seabirds and other marine life
  • Explore the Kaikōura marine environment through the onboard "World of the Whales" presentation

Take to the waters off Kaikōura on a whale watching cruise focused on the giant sperm whales that live in the deep waters of the Kaikōura Canyon. The whales can remain underwater for long periods, so sightings vary, but there is also the chance to encounter other marine mammals along the coast.

Look out for species including dusky and Hector’s dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and, depending on the season, other whales and dolphins. The waters around Kaikōura also attract a wide range of seabirds, including albatross, petrels, shearwaters and gannets.

Learn more about the marine environment during the onboard "World of the Whales" presentation, which explores the underwater canyon and the species found in its waters. The purpose-built catamarans have enclosed seating and outdoor viewing decks for wildlife watching and photography.

Designed specially for whale watching, the modern catamarans are equipped with engines that minimise underwater noise and toilets that never pollute the sea. The main passenger cabin is enclosed and large outside decks offer great viewing and photo opportunities. Passenger numbers for each tour are kept well below our vessel carrying capacity to ensure this tour experience remains a personal one.

Ocean Cabin: The Ocean cabin is the main passenger cabin. It is enclosed with outside decks. The cabin is fitted with comfortable seats. Capacity is 104 passengers.

VIP Captain’s Cabin: The VIP Captain’s Cabin is situated in the wheelhouse. Capacity is limited to 12 passengers. Seats are angled outwards to maximize views through the large windows. There is access to all other passenger areas on the vessel and an exclusive viewing area on the top deck.
