Discover one of South America’s most extraordinary archaeological finds at the Andean Sanctuaries Museum. The museum tells the story of Juanita, a young Inca girl whose frozen remains were discovered high in the Andes Mountains in 1995, preserved in remarkable condition and dating back to around 550 B.C.

Believed to have been sacrificed in a religious ceremony between the ages of 12 and 15, Juanita’s remains have provided scientists with rare insights into Inca life, beliefs, and rituals. Her exceptional preservation has revealed details of health, diet, and ceremonial practices from this ancient civilisation.

While specialists continue to preserve Juanita’s original mummy, the museum displays a detailed replica, allowing visitors to connect with her story and understand her lasting importance in Inca history.
