To find out more about what it's like to lead a tour, we spoke with Tour Manager Rob Sharp about our Very Best of China tour.

Can you tell us about your experience leading our Very Best of China tour, and what you aim to bring to your guests?

China was the very first long-haul destination I led a tour to, and I still remember it as if it were yesterday. Standing on the Great Wall for the first time is a moment that stays with you forever. I strive to share that same sense of wonder with our guests, ensuring they feel comfortable and at ease from the moment they arrive in a vast and fascinating country so unlike any other.

How do you plan for a day on tour?

China is a spirited and expansive country, and each day on tour brings plenty to discover. A typical day for me begins with careful planning (after my obligatory morning coffee!), ensuring everything is in place for a smooth and enjoyable experience. I make sure our guests are fully prepared for the day ahead, from the number of experiences and timings to any practical details they may need, so they can make the most of every moment.

What are some of the unseen details you take care of to ensure everything runs smoothly?

Great question. I find that the key is organisation, being ahead of things means you can deal with unseen details before they arise. Arranging anything and everything – from birthday celebrations to making sure restaurants have all dietary requirements before we arrive. I also make sure that our guides/drivers and I are fully prepared for each day's journey, including knowing the best places to stop for toilet breaks (and coffee stops, of course) so that everything runs smoothly for our guests.

How do you bring China's history and culture to life for guests?

I always give my guests extra insight and knowledge on the history and culture of the country, its people and traditions. I also encourage every guest to mix with the locals who are just as interested in us as we are in them. After 20 years travelling to China, I also have quite a few stories to share with my guests about some of the experiences I've been blessed to have had.

Which moments on the tour never fall to impress guests?

Aside from the unforgettable Great Wall of China, I think the authentic charm of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Pingyao really stands out – it feels like stepping back in time. Also, seeing Shanghai lit up at night from our river cruise has to be one of the most picturesque skyline views on the planet and a perfect finale to the tour.

Do you have a favourite place or experience along the journey, and why?

I think my favourite place on the Very Best of China tour has to be Yangshuo, simply because of the natural beauty of the limestone cliffs and with the Li River all around you. I will never get bored with the scenery there.

Can you share a memorable moment from one of your tours?

Being adopted by a group of 20 Buddhist monks who I took photos of will always stand out as a very memorable moment, especially as we all ended up on stage singing karaoke together. It was very surreal!

What advice would you give to someone visiting China for the first time?

Come to China with an open mind as whatever impressions you may have of the country, and its people, will be nothing like the actual experience of being there. And pack comfortable shoes!
