Chartering a path back when global disruption changed the journey
When conflict in the Middle East disrupted global air travel, many Distant Journeys customers found themselves facing uncertainty about how - and when - they would return home.
The crisis began to unfold on 28th February, and overnight almost 1000 of our customers across Asia, Australasia and Africa were affected. As airspace closures and widespread cancellations reshaped international flight routes, many return journeys via Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar were suddenly no longer possible. With little clarity on when normal travel would resume, delays became inevitable.
Our team began working around the clock to find solutions. Where possible, customers were rebooked on alternative commercial flights via other parts of the world. But for those travelling in parts of Asia, viable routes that avoided the Middle East were extremely limited at the time.
Rather than risk customers being stranded overseas indefinitely, we took the decision to organise a dedicated charter flight at Distant Journeys' expense. More than 400 customers would be brought together and flown home to the UK - providing reassurance and a clear plan in uncertain circumstances.

An Airbus A350 aircraft was secured to operate the special service from Colombo, Sri Lanka to London Stansted - a significant undertaking both logistically and financially. Customers travelling in India, Nepal, Thailand, Bali, Laos, Cambodia and Singapore were flown from their nearest airport to Colombo, where accommodation was arranged on a half-board basis before the return journey. This coordinated effort brought together travellers from across the region, alongside those who had originally been due to return from Sri Lanka. Behind the scenes, teams worked continuously to arrange flights, transfers, accommodation and support, ensuring customers remained informed and well looked after throughout.
To support the operation, a specialist team from our UK Head Office travelled to Sri Lanka, working alongside local colleagues on the ground. They assisted customers throughout their journey, providing practical support and a reassuring presence as plans came together. While customers waited for onward travel, we also extended stays by up to six nights free of charge - ensuring everyone remained comfortable and well looked after during the uncertainty.
The charter aircraft touched down at London Stansted Airport on the morning of 16th March. From there, customers were supported onward to their original departure airports, bringing their extended journeys to a close.

Mrs Warren, one of those returning, said: "We are very grateful to Distant Journeys for organising everything and getting us home safely. I was so pleased when we touched down at Stansted."
Ms Westwood, who had been travelling in India, explained: "Distant Journeys really went above and beyond. The holiday itself was excellent too, with an amazing guide. It won't be our last trip with them."
Reflecting on the operation, Daniel Acarnley, Managing Director of Distant Journeys, said: "We are extremely grateful for the patience our customers showed while we worked to secure the quickest and safest way possible to return them to the UK.
Situations like this highlight why many travellers value the reassurance of booking with a reputable and responsible tour operator. When disruption happens, we deploy our teams on the ground to support customers and make sure they get home safely. Was it easy? Not at all. Was it the right thing to do? Without a doubt."

In your words
Mrs Bowyer "Like many other travellers in India, we were severely affected by the situation and Distant Journeys worked tirelessly, 24 hours a day, securing a safe route home for all their clients. We would have been totally lost without them."
Ms Pytel "As the tour was coming to an end, things were beginning to escalate, and we were getting a little concerned. Distant Journeys absolutely put our minds at ease, assuring us they would look after us - and they did, big time. Apart from the flight back from Sri Lanka, they accommodated us for six extra nights, half board, in five-star hotels,"
Mrs Hart "I was on this flight following an amazing trip to Nepal and Bhutan. I cannot thank Distant Journeys enough for a first-class trip, and everything that went into getting us home - from Kathmandu, to Delhi, to Sri Lanka, to Stansted, to Manchester."
Mrs Taylor "My husband and I were on this flight. Distant Journeys were superb throughout. We were kept up to date daily while they worked out how to get us home. The coordination of 400-plus travellers from all over Asia onto one flight, without so much as a hitch, was nothing short of miraculous."
